Metabolic Health

What is Metabolic Dysfunction?

Metabolic dysfunction refers to an imbalance or breakdown in the body’s normal metabolic processes—especially those that regulate how we produce, store, and use energy.

In a healthy state, your metabolism efficiently converts food into energy, maintains stable blood sugar levels, regulates cholesterol and blood pressure, and supports hormone balance. When metabolic dysfunction occurs, these systems begin to operate inefficiently or improperly, often silently at first.

Common Features of Metabolic Dysfunction:

  • Insulin resistance (when cells stop responding well to insulin)

  • Elevated blood sugar or prediabetes

  • Abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels

  • High blood pressure

  • Increased belly fat or waist circumference

  • Chronic low-grade inflammation

These imbalances are often grouped under what’s called metabolic syndrome—a cluster of risk factors that significantly increase the risk for conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), fatty liver disease, and more.

Metabolic dysfunction can develop over years without obvious symptoms. By understanding and addressing it early—through nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management, and sometimes medical support—it is often preventable and reversible.
